Offisys is a 15 year-old software development company which has its main customers in publicity as well as film producing companies.

Even though our very first stories may refer to those companies as our major partners, our products are used in some other branches of activities, such as printing industry, shooting equipment rentals, pest control companies, and hospital products industry.

We first started as a single person who was invited to develop software for a well-known company in the TV advertisement area – which contributed to our product being one of the most complete ones in the market -; this company generated another customer, who introduced us to another one and so it went. Today we hold a major share in the market of development for such companies.

ProFilme.NET (Pic 1.A) is a product intended for controlling the processes of TV Ads or movie producing specifically designed to serve the demands of that market, which is usually overwhelmed with information, and is in constant need of deep interaction and transformation.

It is a complete set of modules that provides its users with keeping up with all the course of production, from the cataloging of location, casting, suppliers, going all the way in managing the cost center up to the financial closure of the production and/or company itself.

One of the main concerns of Executive Producers or Production Directors is to end up the shooting process within the margin of budget planned for the Job; yet, to know where this budget is being invested and how it was meant to be are other essential concerns. In addition to that, it is of the ultimate importance that the process does not lose its agility. ProFilme.NET represents a way out of the chaos and it serves a good service in all cases which are not dealt appropriately.

ProFilme.NET policies are based in making its tools available to those eligible to manage them, making directors and managers aware of what is going on in the company and productions apart by means of several client-customizable reports, which may be exported to any desired format. It also makes simpler for the financial assistants as they may be set free from the amount of invoice posting they were supposed to be doing after the producer had returned from the shootings. Using ProFime.NET their work may be reduced to making payments and inputting billing dates.

Challenge/situation.

We had the need to find a Report Engine that provided us with the required flexibility to work in integration with our application Framework – StrataFrame – and which was, at the same time, powerful and reliable enough for generating reports using the data of our system. (Pic 2.A)

Our reports needed full integration between the report engine and our business objects. In addition, one of our goals was to provide the customer with a tool that would allow them to customize their own reports (Pic 2.B) based on report templates developed by our team, thus, we would need a user-friendly component to allow editing the layouts designed by the final user.

Fortunately, four years ago while testing some tools we found out that SharpShooter Reports would fulfill all those requirements and we made complete use of the tool and had been proven its benefits ever since.

Solution/results

We were then able to serialize these data, saving them on a database table. (Pic 3.B)

That was of the utmost importance when it came to providing the customer with a safer way of creating variations of the report templates originally sent through ProFilme.NET. (Pic 3.C)

Also, our report viewer had to undergo several customizations so that it would fit the characteristics of our application, such as sending reports via e-mail, specific printer settings, etc. (Pic 3.D.a) ( Pic 3.D.b) (Pic 3.D.c)

During all the process of developing it has been remarkable how responsive the Perpetuum support team is and how promptly they have attended us, making it possible to achieve our goals fast and efficiently.
